Mai’s team member spotlight was published to honor and celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month as she resonates with Hmong, an indigenous group that live throughout Southeast Asia.
What’s your job title and how long have you worked at 老葡京手机app?
Mai with her mom and daughter in their traditional Hmong clothes.
I am a senior accountant and have been with 老葡京手机app for over a year.
What inspired you to work in accounting?
An individual who took a chance on me. I moved to the DMV area after graduation with no experience. I met an individual who happened to see potential in me and taught me what I know now. This person has over 10+ years of experience and saw the drive me in and took me under her wings. We’ve had our share of laughs and tears which opened my eyes to see how rewarding it is to work in accounting.
What’s the most exciting part of your job?
The people. I’ve always worked with a handful of people only and being able to work with many people has been amazing. Everyone has lots of knowledge and I’ve gained a lot working with the people here. It has been enjoyable so far.
Do you have any advice for people looking to enter accounting or work at 老葡京手机app?
Be opened to learning new things and open minded.
Does your family have any traditions that are especially important to you?
Cooking and eating together. My family bonds over food, whether its immediate or distant family – food always brings us closer. It’s the only time out of our busy days where we can sit together to talk and laugh or bond over memories. Since moving away, one thing my mom always does is makes sure we are fed our favorite foods when we visit. My parents are people with very few words, but food is their love language. Cooking is something my mother instilled in me. Now, when I have visitors, I always cook up a storm, even if it’s only a few people. You will never go home hungry or empty handed as well.
What are some interesting hobbies or talents most people may not know about you?
I love being on the water. As I’m getting older, I enjoy the sound of the water and/or surrounding nature and its peacefulness. I also love to travel. I spent 5 months in Thailand studying and exploring the country. I fell in love with the country, the amazing places and the food.
What does Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month mean to you?
To me, AAPI Heritage month means remembering who we are, our culture, and to always be proud of who we are. It’s also a time to share our cultures with the rest of society in terms of food, language, and history.
